Football Digest: Harry Maguire stripped of Man Utd captaincy

Manchester United and Newcastle are set go head-to-head in the race for AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi.

Both United and Newcastle are intent on bolstering their squads after qualifying for next season’s Champions League, with the former already wrapping up a deal for Mason Mount. Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana is on the cusp of following the England midfielder to Old Trafford, with an announcement set to be made imminently.

The Red Devils are expected to target a striker after concluding a deal for Onana but the club have also been linked with defensive reinforcements on more than one occasion already this summer.

And according to Sky Germany, United have now entered into talks with Monaco with a view to striking a deal for Disasi. The 25-year-old is valued at around €45million (£39m) by his club - a sum that could prove to be too rich for Manchester United, who are working with a limited budget this summer.

With a deal for Onana nearing completion, Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund is Erik ten Hag’s No.1 striker target and talks have already begun with the Serie A outfit over a deal.

The impressive 20-year-old will not be prised away from Atalanta on the cheap: the Italian side value their star striker at around £86m although there is an acceptance that a deal could be struck for a smaller sum. A deal for Hojlund, coupled with the £43m outlay on Onana, is likely to restrict Manchester United’s spending power when it comes to further deals.

Despite budget concerns, Disasi has been touted as a ‘serious’ option for Manchester United if Ten Hag does decide to bring in another central defender. The club splashed out on Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez last summer and he made a big impact in his maiden season at Old Trafford.

United’s talks with Monaco over Disasi represent a fresh setback for Harry Maguire, who revealed that he had been stripped of the club captaincy on Sunday following showdown talks with Ten Hag.

Maguire, 30, lost his place in the team shortly after the Dutchman’s arrival and struggled to nail down a regular starting berth during the second half of the season.

The former Leicester City star, who joined Manchester United for £80m back in 2019, has been linked with a move away for months and West Ham have been in touch over a deal.

Maguire has so far been reluctant to entertain the idea of quitting Old Trafford but it remains to be seen if that stance will soften in the coming weeks following his latest round of talks with Ten Hag.
