Football Digest: Harry Maguire stripped of Man Utd captaincy
Things are getting busy at Manchester United as the new Premier League season approaches.
Having already acquired Mason Mount from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £55million, the Red Devils want to make further signings to bolster Erik ten Hag’s squad ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. Set to be next through the door is Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, who United have struck a deal for, the details of which are now emerging.
There’s also the case of getting players off the books, with Harry Maguire potentially leading a wave of exits following Ten Hag’s decision to strip him of the captain’s armband. United are also in talks to extend a number of players’ contracts and there’s been major breakthrough in negotiations with Marcus Rashford.
Here’s a round-up of the latest transfer news from Old Trafford.
Details of Onana deal
Andre Onana will cost Manchester United an initial €50million (£42.9m) plus potential add-ons worth €5m (£4.2m), according to various reports. After agreeing personal terms, the Cameroonian goalkeeper, 27, is also set to sign a five-year contract, with the option of a further year.
Onana’s arrival, which club officials hope to confirm this week, is expected to have knock-on effects on the future of two Red Devils goalkeepers, Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton. While want-away Henderson is poised to join Nottingham Forest on a permanent basis up around £30m, veteran Heaton is also wanted by Luton following their promotion to the top flight.

Maguire decides on exit
Harry Maguire is furious after being stripped of the captaincy and will now push to leave United, the Sun claim. The 30-year-old centre-back was left ‘angry, shocked and upset’ Ten Hag informed him that another player would wear the armband for the 2023-24 season.
With Maguire previously linked with a move to Tottenham and West Ham, it’s added in the report that Chelsea are considering making a bid. The Reds Devils won’t let him go on the cheap, though, having forked out a record £80m to sign him from Leicester in 2019, making him the most expensive defender of all time.
Rashford contract breakthrough
Marcus Rashford is finally on the verge of signing a new deal at Old Trafford, having reached a five-year agreement in principle with the club. Rashford, 25, has entered the final 12 months of his current £200,000-a-week contract but is set to put pen to paper on renewed terms soon.
The England international rejected lucrative proposals from rival clubs in the Premier League and foreign sides, the Athletic report. Instead, Rashford has committed his future to United until 2028 and wants to be part of Ten Hag’s long-term project following his 30-goal season last time out.
