Friendlies review, Kane nets four, Brighton held

1 minute read

Harry Kane scored four times as Tottenham Hotspur earned an emphatic 5-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in their penultimate match of pre-season.

New head coach Ange Postecoglou, managing Spurs at home for the first time, saw his side take the lead shortly before the break, as Kane converted his first of the afternoon from the penalty spot after James Maddison had been fouled.

The visitors were level on the stroke of half-time, but Maddison and then Dejan Kulusevski combined with Kane to net twice in quick succession five minutes after the restart.

Kane added his fourth with a close-range finish on 79 minutes, before Dane Scarlett’s turn and shot in stoppage time completed the win.

Spurs are next in pre-season action on Tuesday, when they travel to Spain to take on Barcelona, ahead of their first match of the 2023/24 Premier League season away to Brentford on Sunday 13 August.

Pedro spot on again

A penalty from Joao Pedro helped Brighton & Hove Albion complete their pre-season fixtures with a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano at the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls made a bright start, almost taking the lead when Danny Welbeck headed against the woodwork on 11 minutes.

Two minutes later, a mistake from goalkeeper Jason Steele allowed Alvaro Rivera to put the visitors in front.

Joao Pedro, a summer signing from Watford, equalised on 65 minutes, converting from 12 yards for his second successful spot-kick of the summer.

Brighton can now look forward to their first home Premier League match of 2023/24 against promoted Luton Town on Saturday 12 August.
