Manchester United fans have a clear favourite for the takeover
Erik ten Hag may have got the striker he was after in the form of Rasmus Hojlund, but Manchester United may still have work to do.
Hojlund has followed Mason Mount and Andre Onana in moving to Old Trafford, taking the club’s summer spending north of £150m. There have also been exits, most notably for David de Gea, while the Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay have been the subject of interest from West Ham.
While sales might be required to fund further deals this summer, a move for Harry Kane next summer could end up being yet another statement for Ten Hag’s side. Here are the latest news lines from around Old Trafford.
West Ham eyeing McTominay alternatives
West Ham United are beginning to look at other midfield options after failing to reach an agreement on a Scott McTominay fee, according to Sky Sports. The Hammers are said to be closer to a compromise on Harry Maguire than his club colleague, after seeing a bid for the pair knocked back.
The Hammers are, at the time of writing, understood to be close to concluding a deal for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez. However, after losing captain Declan Rice to Arsenal, they are thought to want another new face in the middle of the park.
McTominay could yet be one of those new faces, but for now they have turned their focus towards other targets including James Ward-Prowse. A £30m bid for the Southampton captain was rejected in July, and Ward-Prowse played in his team’s Championship opener against Sheffield Wednesday.
Neville makes bold Kane claim
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has suggested Harry Kane would prefer to join Manchester United over Bayern Munich as he chases down the Premier League’s all-time goal record. German champions Bayern have seen multiple bids rejected for the England captain, who is in the final year of his Tottenham contract and could leave for free next summer.

“I am hoping they are watching what is happening and being clever and waiting, seeing an £86m deal might get agreed with Bayern and Kane goes ‘I’m not going, I want to go to United’,” Neville said on The Overlap. “United need Harry Kane and he puts them into that realm of catching City and Arsenal. They need someone right here, right now.
“I will be stunned if he goes to Bayern and doesn’t want to break that Premier League record. Tottenham have rejected that bid because they know he isn’t going to go to Bayern. Harry Kane wants them to believe he will accept that money and will then go, ‘no I want to go to United’. Levy would be dead. He knows he won’t go to Munich otherwise he would accept it.”
Weghorst finds new club
Former Manchester United loanee Wout Weghorst is on his way back to the Bundesliga and thanked United on social media ahead of a Hoffenheim switch. The Dutch striker had returned to parent club Burnley after his Old Trafford spell came to a close, but is now on the move again.
BILD reported Weghorst had agreed a season-long loan to Hoffenheim, with the striker confirming on Instagram he would not be back at Old Trafford. “Childhood dream. Thank you for everything Manchester United,” he wrote.
The 31-year-old will hope his second spell in Germany is as successful as the first. He scored 59 goals in 118 league games for Wolfsburg, including 20 in the 2020-21 season to help deliver Champions League qualification.
