Erling Haaland is one of three members of Manchester City’s treble-winning side nominated for the 2022-23 Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) men’s Players’ Player of the Year award.

Manchester City teammates Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones are also on the six-person shortlist, alongside Arsenal pair Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka and former Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

Haaland broke the Premier League goalscoring record for most goals in a single season during his debut campaign in England, scoring 36 times in 35 appearances following his summer move from Borussia Dortmund. The 23-year-old finished the 2022-23 season with 52 goals in all competitions as City won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

De Bruyne finished as the Premier League’s top assist-maker last season, with 16 in 32 appearances, and also got on the scoresheet seven times in the top flight.

Stones was a pivotal part of City’s treble-winning side and excelled after being moved from defence into a midfield role.

Odegaard and Saka were standout performers for Arsenal as Mikel Arteta’s side fell just short in the title race. Saka enjoyed his best individual season to date with 14 goals and 11 assists in 38 Premier League appearances.

Arsenal captain Odegaard finished the season as his side’s joint-top scorer alongside Gabriel Martinelli after registering 15 goals and seven assists in 37 top flight appearances.

Kane, who departed Tottenham for Bayern Munich this summer, scored 30 Premier League goals last season — equalling his best ever top flight return — and broke Jimmy Greaves’ all-time Tottenham goalscoring record.

The winner of the award will be announced on August 29 in a ceremony at the Lowry Theatre.

The PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist will be announced later today.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah won the men’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year award last season.
