Chelsea’s spending under Todd Boehly continues to edge towards £1BILLION after securing a deal for Brazilian striker Deivid Washington.
The American has pumped vast amounts into the Stamford Bridge club after succeeding former boss Roman Abramovich at the helm. He spent around £600m over his first season at the club.
That trend has continued this summer with another eye-watering outlay. Chelsea have broken the British transfer record with the signing of Brighton ’s Moises Caicedo, whilst Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Robert Sanchez and Romeo Lavia are also among their more lucrative additions this summer. In all, Chelsea have welcomed 10 new faces to Stamford Bridge.
With deadline day just over a week away, the additions have continued with teenage striker Washington putting pen to paper on a move to West London. Chelsea have reportedly spent around €20m (£17.2m) on the young Brazilian and he has signed a seven-year contract, with the option of a further season, with the Blues.
Washington has joined from Brazilian side Santos, where he made 16 appearances and scored two goals. Washington could potentially be sent straight out on loan. Chelsea are set to decide whether to send him to French side Strasbourg. Todd Boehly’s BlueCo completed a takeover of the Ligue 1 outfit earlier this year.
Despite the Blues’ huge transfer outlay, their spending does not look set to end there. Reports have suggested that Chelsea are on the verge of sealing a £14m deal for New England Revolution goalkeeper Djorde Petrovic. The Serbian stopper will arrive at Stamford Bridge as a back-up to fellow summer arrival Robert Sanchez.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has criticised Chelsea for their transfer policy this summer. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I do feel when you spend that amount of money, it does feel strange when we’re all asked before the start of the season, not many people are putting Chelsea in the top four.
“We’re not all top tipsters, we know that, we know when the results come out. It doesn’t mean they won’t finish there but not many people are thinking that squad with that much money spent on it will finish in the top four. That doesn’t seem right to me because that is an unbelievable amount of money.”
Chelsea are yet to win a Premier League game under their new manager Mauricio Pochettino. They kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Liverpool but then fell to a 3-1 defeat to West Ham.
