Football Digest: Analysing Man Utd’s failed recruitment

There’s just one week to go until the summer transfer window closes - and Manchester United are racing to beat the clock.

Following an underwhelming start to the new Premier League season, Erik ten Hag hopes his bosses will breach the £200million mark and splash out on more signings. The Red Devils were fortunate to come away with a controversial 1-0 victory over Wolves in their first game before slumping to a dismal 2-0 defeat at Tottenham.

It’s evident that United need to improve in various areas throughout the course of the campaign and new recruits could do just that. With Mason Mount potentially out injured until October, Ten Hag and co are reassessing their plans for the next seven days. They will also host Nottingham Forest, as club staff brace themselves for more anti-Glazer protests and criticism for their handling of Mason Greenwood’s exit, which remains in the spotlight.

Here’s a round-up of the latest transfer news from Old Trafford.

Evans set to stay

Jonny Evans is close to agreeing a one-year deal with Manchester United after returning to Old Trafford in pre-season. Evans, 35, signed a short-term contract with the Red Devils in July which was due to expire at the end of this month, but Erik ten Hag has been impressed with him in training and approved a permanent stay.

The Telegraph explain that the Northern Irish centre-back’s new deal raises further doubts over Harry Maguire’s future, despite his £30m transfer to West Ham collapsing last week. Evans is reported to have featured in United’s 3-0 defeat to Burnley behind closed doors on Wednesday.

Fiorentina exile Amrabat

Heavily rumoured Manchester United target Sofyan Amrabat has been ordered to train alone by Fiorentina amid the uncertainty surrounding his future, boss Vincenzo Italiano has confirmed. The Morocco international didn’t feature in their Europa Conference League qualifying clash with Rapid Vienna on Thursday.

It’s believed the Serie A side would be willing to accept around £21m to sell Amrabat, who’s entered the final year of his contract, but reports earlier this week stated that he had until this Friday to decide his future. Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the 27-year-old, as Jurgen Klopp targets a new midfielder.

Double departure confirmed

Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has joined Championship side Ipswich Town on a season-long loan. The full-back, 22, will reunite with former Red Devils coach Kieran McKenna.

Meanwhile, United have confirmed that academy starlet Noam Emeran is to join Dutch side Groningen on a permanent basis. The Red Devils say the fee for the 20-year-old French forward will remain “undisclosed”. Reports claim it’s worth less than £1m but does include a sell-on clause.
