Football Digest: Arsenal defeat Man Utd 3-1
Ian Wright has questioned Erik ten Hag’s loyalty to Antony and believes Alejandro Garnacho should be starting ahead of the Brazilian.
Antony, 23, was named in the starting line-up for Sunday’s 3-1 defeat against Arsenal but it was Garnacho, 19, who caught the eye after coming off the bench in the second half. The Argentina international thought he’d given Manchester United the lead late on before VAR intervened, with Arsenal going on to score two last-gasp goals to pinch all three points.
Despite that setback, Garnacho made a major impression in his cameo; Antony, however, was largely ineffective and has generally struggled to live up to expectations since joining the Red Devils in an £85million deal from Ajax last summer.
And Wright, who was analysing the game, was left baffled by Ten Hag’s decision to start Antony ahead of Garnacho. He told Premier League Productions: “I think Garnacho is a positive [from the defeat].
“I think they’ve got to find some way of getting a midfielder in their team who can get on the ball, control it and then use the pace of Rashford and use the pace of Garnacho. Because they’re playing on the counter-attack. I’m listening to Bruno Fernandes saying he was happy with the way it went, he thought they played well and dug in.
“Man United have got the kind of players [to attack more]. We saw it with Garnacho, who I cannot believe does not start in front of someone like Antony.

“He [Garnacho] can come on in that game and, even if you’re playing in that style of football, he’s surely going to be better than what Antony is giving you at this particularly moment. We saw it in that little cameo there what he did.”
While it remains to be seen if Garnacho’s late goal would have been enough to secure victory for United before VAR’s intervention, Ten Hag was adamant that the decision to disallow the teenager’s goal was incorrect.

He fumed to Sky Sports after the match: “I think the performance was right, we played a very good game. Everything went against us but with a little bit more luck for us, we could have won the game.
“You have to accept it [the offside decision] but I’ve seen a different angle and I think he was onside. But, you have to accept it. It doesn’t change the result.”
