Manchester United and Brazil winger Antony is being investigated by Greater Manchester Police over claims he attacked his former girlfriend and was dramatically dumped by Brazil’s national team due to the allegations.

Gabriela Cavallin claims she was headbutted and punched by Antony in a Manchester hotel room the day after United’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City on January 14 that resulted in a cut to her head and a breast implant being damaged.

Cavallin said she received treatment from an English doctor in her room at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Manchester following the alleged attack. The news is the latest controversy to surround United and comes just a fortnight after the club announced Mason Greenwood was to leave the club despite charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour being dropped by the Crown Prosection Service. Greenwood has consistently denied all charges against him.

In an interview with the Brazilian website UOL, which was published on Monday and included photographs and screenshots of messages, Cavallin also alleged that she suffered a cut finger while trying to protect herself after accusing Antony of throwing a glass cup at her.

The incident is alleged to have occurred at a house on May 8, the day after United lost 1-0 to West Ham in London.

Brazil axed Antony from their squad for World Cup qualifying matches against Bolivia on Friday and Peru four days later and called up Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus in his place, explaining the claims against him influenced their decision.

In a statement, the Brazilian Football Confederation said: “Due to the facts that became public this Monday, involving striker Antony, from Manchester United, and which need to be investigated, and in order to preserve the alleged victim, the player, the Brazilian team and the CBF, the federations informs that the athlete has been withdrawn from the Brazilian team.”

Cavallin, 23, who is an influencer and DJ, claims she was subjected to a series of attacks by Antony between June last year and May this year.

She alleges she was first attacked by Antony on June 1 2022 while she was pregnant on holiday and claimed the 23-year-old United player threatened to throw her out of a moving car at speed.

Sao Paulo Civil Police are currently investigating Cavallin’s claims after she filed a report to them in June accusing Antony of “domestic violence, threat and bodily injury”. Cavallin also filed a separate complaint to Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

In a statement to Telegraph Sport on Monday, GMP said: “Greater Manchester Police is aware of the allegations made and enquiries remain ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this report. We will not be commenting any further at this time.”

Antony – who joined United from Ajax in an £85.5 million deal in September last year, which made him the world’s 13th most costliest player at the time – denies any wrongdoing.

In a statement on Instagram, Antony said: “Out of respect for my fans, friends and family I feel obligated to speak publicly about the false accusations I have been a victim of.

“From the beginning I have handled this issue seriously and with respect, providing the due clarifications to the police authority. The police inquest is under cover of justice, and therefore cannot make its content public. However, I can say with confidence that the accusations are false and that the evidence already produced and more to be produced show that I am innocent of the accusations made.

“My relationship with Ms. Gabriela was tumultuous, with verbal offenses from both sides, but I never practiced any physical aggression. Every time, whether in testimony or in an interview, she presents a different version of the accusations. Thus, I come to deny the accusations made and inform that I remain at the full disposal of the Brazilian authorities to clarify what is needed. I trust the ongoing police investigations will reveal the truth about my innocence.”

Manchester United declined to comment when approached for a response.

In a statement to Telegraph Sport on Monday after the latest claims by Cavallin, Junior Pedroso, Antony’s agent, said: “We are silent because there is an investigative process at a police station in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

“Several people that she [Cavallin] named as witnesses are being heard. The investigative process requires great caution to ascertain the facts as carefully as possible.

“Antony will not pronounce himself until justice has given his opinion about the case, which in our understanding is unfavourable to Gabriela.

“What can be observed is that she always appears in the media when she knows that she can affect Antony. But the exposed facts are the same ones that are being treated in the investigative process.”

Greenwood, who has not played for United since he was first arrested in January last year, joined Spanish club Getafe on loan on Friday while Jadon Sancho created further problems for Erik ten Hag on Sunday night when the United winger reacted angrily to his manager claiming his absence in the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal was down to his performance level in training. Sancho said the claims were “completely untrue” and that he was being made a “scapegoat”.

Antony is in Brazil’s squad for their World Cup qualifying matches against Bolivia and Peru on September 8 and 12 respectively.

Speaking about the alleged incident at the Hyatt hotel in Manchester on January 15, Cavallin told UOL: “I don’t remember exactly who the fight was about, but it was someone I had already hooked up with years ago. He punched me in the chest and my silicone turned over. And then I came to Brazil to operate. I had to change the prosthesis.

“He said, ‘I didn’t mean to hurt you, it was accidental, it wasn’t a punch, I just pushed you, I just held you against the wall’.”

UOL reported that an English doctor called Hina Tehseen took medication to Cavallin’s room and that a conversation with the doctor was one of the pieces of evidence being examined in the police investigation.

UOL reported that “the months that followed the January episode were, according to Gabriela, a crescendo of attacks that ended with a serious injury, the return to Brazil and the search for protection”.

Of the alleged incident at a house on May 8, Cavallin told UOL: “Antony locked the door of the house and wouldn’t let me go out, and I had my finger open, all hurt.

“He broke my things, took my passport. His mother and stepfather even trapped him inside the football court, he had a football court inside his living room, surrounded by a fence, like a fence.

“He was upset, trying to get out of the court in any way, throwing a football at me, throwing a cell phone at me. He said he was going to kill me, that he was going to kill himself.”

UOL reported that a video of the injury Cavallin allegedly suffered to her hand was provided to the police.

Cavallin said she had been left “shaking with fear” after the alleged attack while pregnant on holiday on June 1 last year. “He said that if I didn’t stay with him, I wouldn’t stay with anyone. I told him that I was pregnant, that he was scaring me, making my heart race,” Cavallin told UOL, adding that she went to hospital the next day.

According to the report, Cavallin lost the baby at around 16 weeks of pregnancy on July 21 last year while still on holiday in Brazil.
