Sofyan Amrabat has pulled out of the Morocco squad due to injury.

The 27-year-old travelled to team-up with his national team earlier this week despite Manchester United detecting a slight back problem during his medical. Amrabat joined the Red Devils in a season-long loan move from Fiorentina on deadline day as United finally signed another defensive midfielder.

Erik ten Hag’s side will pay Fiorentina £8.5million to take Amrabat on loan, befores having an option to make the transfer permanent next summer for £21.5m. He was United’s fourth and final deadline day addition following the arrivals of with goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, left-back Sergio Reguilon and centre-back Jonny Evans.

While undergoing his medical, United staff found that Amrabat had a ‘minor back injury’, but pushed through the deal as it was not thought to be serious. Amrabat was not registered in time to be available for United’s trip to Arsenal last Sunday, although United did manage to get Bayindir, Reguilon and Evans involved.

Amrabat then decided to travel to the Morocco camp for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Liberia on Saturday and a friendly at home to Burkina Faso next Tuesday. But he will play no part in either of those matches after he was replaced by Yahya Jabrane in Walid Regragui’s squad.

It is not yet known whether Amrabat will travel straight back to Manchester to continue his rehabilitation ahead of United’s first Premier League match after the international break. Amrabat could make his Premier League debut against Brighton on September 16 - four days before Ten Hag’s side return to the Champions League against Bayern Munich.

Speaking after making the move to United, Amrabat said earlier this week: “I want to show it on the pitch, but I can promise that I will give my best with everything; every day, every minute, every second. So, it is the only thing that I can say now.

“I am really excited to be here, I really can’t wait to start and I promise I will give everything that I have to help the team and make the fans proud.”

“I was 18, 19 years old and he [Ten Hag] gave me the chance to play in the first team with Utrecht,” Amrabat added when asked about Ten Hag. “We had a fantastic time, a really good season. I learned a lot from him. So maybe he’s one of the most important people in my career for now.”
