Paul Scholes gives brutally honest response to finally put end to Steven Gerrard debate
Manchester United could change their stance on Donny van de Beek as they and the player look to find a resolution on his future.
The Dutchman is down the pecking order and doesn’t appear to be part of Erik ten Hag’s plans given he was left out of the recent Champions League squad. Van de Beek failed to secure moves away late in the transfer market with French club Lorient keen.
Turkey now appears a feasible option with ESPN reporting that two SuperLig clubs - Galatasaray and Fenerbahce - are interested with their transfer window still open. United had been determined to offload the Dutchman on a permanent basis, but a loan is now being considered.
The Premier League club felt they could recoup a decent fee for Van de Beek, whom they signed for £40m in 2021 from Ajax. With time running out though the bosses at Old Trafford could green-light a temporary departure, potentially with an option or an obligation to buy.
Ten Hag was willing to let Fred leave the club with his minutes at a premium and others are also considering their futures. Scott McTominay is set to play a squad role with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount and new signing Sofyan Amrabat all ahead of him in the pecking order.
United’s financial problems meant they’ve had to carefully balance the books to bring in the talent they have. As a result, they wanted Van de Beek off their books permanently but that may not be possible in the coming weeks.
Donny van de Beek isn’t part of Erik ten Hag’s plans
The Netherlands international has endured a torrid time in Manchester, failing to get a run of games under either of the managers he’s played under. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and now Ten Hag have all overlooked him on a regular basis, which has led to a sense of frustration, and the finger of blame being pointed at United for not offloading the player already.
Last season the United boss called for me as he said: “He has to make that step up. I don’t think a loan [makes] sense. It’s either he fights [for] himself and proves himself, in this atmosphere in this environment, or he goes. But for me, there is still a way for him, there is still a perspective for him. It’s not going to be easy because the competition there is really strong.”

It looks as if that stance could change now with the player not starting a game for months, which has also impacted his international career. His last start came in January, which was one of just two games he played from the beginning in the Premier League.
