In Saturday evening’s Euro qualifiers, United duo Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford both got minutes for England in a 1-1 draw with Ukraine.
Maguire played the entirety of the fixture in the Three Lions’ back four and twice went close to scoring a winning goal at the other end - via two unsuccessful second-half headers - but the points were shared at full-time in the Group C clash, played in Poland.
Rashford was introduced in the 65th minute as England tried to complete a turnaround, after Manchester City defender Kyle Walker’s equaliser had cancelled out Ukraine’s opener from Arsenal man Oleksandr Zinchenko, but the game would go on to finish level.
The result maintains the six-point gap that Gareth Southgate’s side have on their latest opponents at the top of the standings, although Ukraine do have a game in hand.
Elsewhere, Victor Lindelof captained Sweden to an important victory over Estonia, in their hopes of qualifying for next summer’s tournament in Germany.
Our no.2 played the full 90 minutes for his nation away from home, helping to keep a clean sheet in a 5-0 triumph that Viktor Gyokeres, Dejan Kulusevski, Alexander Isak, Robin Quaison and Viktor Claesson all got on the scoresheet in.
The win brings Sweden three points closer to Belgium and Austria in Group F’s two automatic qualification spots, narrowing their deficit on both nations to four points.
Earlier on, there was 2026 World Cup qualifying action to keep an eye out for, involving our Reds.
Like Lindelof, Casemiro skippered his country to a victory in which they netted five goals, as Brazil kicked off their campaign in South America with a 5-1 win over Bolivia.
Forwards Neymar and Rodrygo each netted twice for the five-time World Cup winners, with Raphinha also finding the target. Victor Abrego was Bolivia’s scorer.
Meanwhile, Uruguay also put three points on the board in game one, with young United winger Facundo Pellistri playing 71 minutes in their 3-1 home triumph over Chile. Nicolas de la Cruz (2) and Federico Valverde got La Celeste’s goals, before Arturo Vidal’s consolation for the visitors late on.
