The verdict on Arsenal 3 Manchester United 1

While many Manchester United players represent their national sides, Erik ten Hag has a job on his hands before the Premier League season resumes.

United lost their last game before the break, falling to a late 3-1 loss at Arsenal. Ten Hag was left frustrated by some refereeing decisions in the match, while the result has since arguably been overshadowed by a war of words between the manager and out-of-favour winger Jadon Sancho.

As is often the case during an international break, plenty of people have taken the opportunity to have their say about a number of things affecting United and their top-flight rivals. Here are the latest news lines from around Old Trafford.

Ten Hag reminded of Neville comments

Scott McTominay provided a reminder of his quality in Scotland’s victory over Cyprus, just weeks after Gary Neville accused Erik ten Hag of managing the midfielder out of the club at Man Utd. McTominay scored Scotland’s opener in Larnaca, with Ryan Porteous and John McGinn also on target in a 3-0 win.

The 26-year-old has played just seven minutes of club football this season, making late substitute appearances against Wolves and Nottingham Forest. Even before the arrival of Sofyan Amrabat, Ten Hag didn’t appear keen on McTominay - something Neville pointed out in August.

“With Fernandes on the right, the midfield looks all over the place and the front three doesn’t look capable of functioning as one,” United’s former captain told Sky Sports. “Does he go back to McTominay? Ten Hag has made five substitutions and not used him. It’s almost as if he is managing him out of the club.”

“Mase is proper Chels through and through,” Terry told Knockout Events. “There’s always two sides to a story and I know the other side to it.

“I’m not going to air that tonight but there’s another side to the story. Let’s not be too harsh on him when he comes back.”

According to ESPN, both Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are interested in the former Ajax star. The same report suggests United could now entertain the idea of a loan move, having previously attempted to recoup a fee.

Van de Beek cost United £40m in 2020 and is under contract until 2025, with an option for a further year. However, his omission from the club’s Champions League squad suggests he is not part of Erik ten Hag’s immediate plans.
