England wore the usual kit for the match

England supporters have been left confused after the team did not take to the pitch against Scotland wearing their special edition kit.

Kit manufacturer Nike created the Three Lions a one-off strip for the friendly at Hampden Park on Tuesday night. The minimalist design marks the 150th anniversary of the world’s oldest international fixture.

England’s squad wore a jersey bearing the original crest from the first Scotland v England meeting in 1872 during the warm-up in Glasgow. But fans were left confused after Scotland came out for the 7.45pm kick-off wearing their special edition kit and England didn’t.

“Hold on England in their usual kit wtf?” one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Why are England not wearing the commemorative shirt then? Weird,” another added.

One wrote: “Pointless shirt if you’re not wearing it in the game.” Another added: “Wish England wore the heritage kit for the game and not the warm-up.”

The fact is that England were never planning on wearing the shirt in the match. It was only ever meant to be worn in the warm-up and it also won’t be available for general sale. The shirts will be auctioned off to raise funds for the FA’s charity partner, the Alzheimer’s Society.

England instead wore their usual white shirt with a blue top – and it didn’t do them any harm. They dominated the first half and went into the break 2-0 up following goals from Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham.

Foden turned in Kyle Walker to open the scoring before a mistake from Andy Robertson presented Bellingham with a simple chance. The kit is all about history – and Gareth Southgate was keen to share his memories of England vs Scotland over the years. “My first memory is some of the Scottish fans nicking the goalposts at Wembley back in ’77,” he said.

“When I was growing up, there was only the FA Cup final and the home internationals that were live on television, so it was the only game we saw.

“This is horrendous what I’m going to say here ahead of tomorrow, but I was supporting Scotland in the 1978 World Cup because we had not qualified. Then we were back in ’82 and all of a sudden, onwards it was all about England. But they are great fixtures.

“I know there’s a rivalry and I know people will be wary of it crossing a boundary, but it’s a brilliant sporting rivalry and a great game to be involved in.”

The one-off auction in support of Alzheimer’s Society is now live HERE and will run until 8pm on Saturday, September 30. Bids can be made for the shirts worn during the warm-up and for limited edition unworn shirts.
