Football Digest: Maguire ‘needs saving from himself’
Donny van de Beek has been registered in Manchester United’s 25-man Premier League squad after seeing a proposed transfer to Fenerbahce collapse.
Van de Beek, 26, has struggled to make any sort of impression at Old Trafford since completing a £35million switch from Ajax back in 2020 and was expected to move on from the club in the summer transfer window.
However, Van de Beek failed to secure a switch before the English window shut earlier this month. And despite reports claiming the Dutchman could still move on before the Turkish transfer deadline, it now seems likely that Van de Beek will be staying put until January.
Reports in Turkey had outlined that Fenerbahce were weighing up a swoop for Van de Beek, however, it is now being claimed that the SuperLig giants are exploring other options.
That means Van de Beek is now expected to stay at Old Trafford at least until the transfer window reopens in January; a development that has been reflected by the inclusion of the midfielder in Manchester United’s official Premier League squad list.
Despite omitting him the club’s Champions League squad, Erik ten Hag has included Van de Beek in the 25-man list that the club submitted to the league on Wednesday.

Whilst Van de Beek is eligible to feature for United in the league following the closure of the transfer window, it remains to be seen how much football the midfield maestro will actually get between now and January.
Van de Beek has started just six Premier League matches in the three years he’s spent at Old Trafford since leaving Ajax and has yet to make a single matchday squad in the league so far this term.

His prospects of more regular first-team action are likely to be even slimmer following the deadline day arrival of Sofyan Amrabat, who is expected to slot straight into the team after signing from Fiorentina.
Youngsters Hannibal Mejbri and Dan Gorre have both been selected as substitutes ahead of Van de Beek in recent weeks, whilst Kobbie Mainoo, another highly-rated midfield prospect, is expected to be reintegrated into the first-team squad once he makes a return to full fitness in the coming weeks after impressing during pre-season.
