Jonjo Shelvey is close to joining Turkish club Rizespor as he nears the end of his unhappy spell at Nottingham Forest.
Shelvey is set to fly out to join the Super Lig club on loan for the season to bring his seven-month career with Forest to an end.
Forest are naming their 25-man squad on Wednesday and working to move on other fringe players including £16 million signing Emmanuel Dennis.
Shelvey, a former England international, has not been involved in Steve Cooper’s squad since April after a disagreement before Forest’s game at Liverpool, as reported by Telegraph Sport.
The 31-year-old did have offers to stay in England, with Burnley, Sheffield United and Leeds all registering interest last month, but the midfielder is opting for a fresh start in the ambitious Turkish League.
Rizespor are based in the eastern part of the Black Sea region of Turkey and are currently fifth in the table.
Signed from Newcastle in January this year for a nominal fee, Shelvey did initially feature in Cooper’s plans until a costly mistake in Forest’s 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa in April.
He was left at home for the club’s pre-season training camp in Valencia and has been training with a small group of fellow outcasts at the Nigel Doughty Academy.
The Turkish transfer deadline is Friday night and Dennis, the Forest forward, is also attracting interest from the league.
Dennis joined from Watford last summer but he has also fallen out of favour with Cooper.
Giulian Biancone, the defender, has joined Olympiacos on a permanent deal after making just two league appearances as a substitute for the club.
Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath and midfielder Harry Arter will also be cleared to leave if they receive any offers.
Forest signed 13 new players in the summer window, including seven on transfer deadline day, to take their spend to around £90 million.
Meanwhile, Forest full-back Harry Toffolo has been given a suspended five-month ban after admitting to 375 breaches of Football Association betting rules.
The FA said the 28-year-old had also been fined £20,956.22 by an independent regulatory commission after he was charged in July, and the player has admitted breaches of FA betting rules between January 22, 2014 and March 18, 2017. The ban is suspended until the end of the 2024-25 season.
The sanctions on Toffolo follow the imposition of an eight-month ban on Brentford striker Ivan Toney in May for 232 breaches of FA betting regulations.
Forest have declined to comment on the sanctions imposed on Toffolo, but the club’s manager Steve Cooper pledged his support for the player back in July.
“What I will say about H [Toffolo] is that we love him and we’re there for him, whatever happens,” Cooper said.
“That’s the group of players and staff we are, that when people need each other we stand up. He knows that. We’re really looking forward to doing right by him.”
