Erik ten Hag previews Brighton clash

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that both Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are fit to play against Brighton on Saturday.

There were some concerns about Martinez’s availability after he limped out of the defeat to Arsenal with a foot injury. He was also left out of both of Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers in this week’s international break, despite traveling to South America.

Lindelof also retired early from the trip to the Gunners, though Ten Hag has confirmed that both centre-backs are available to feature against Brighton at Old Trafford. That will be a huge boost for the United boss, with Raphael Varane still sidelined.

Both the Frenchman and Mason Mount remain in the treatment room, though Ten Hag revealed that the duo are in a “good place” and are “shortly coming” towards a comeback. Varane and Mount are joined on the sidelines by Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Sofyan Amrabat.

Antony and Jadon Sancho are also not available, leaving Ten Hag with a selection headache when it comes to the right wing. But the United boss is keen to focus on Brighton and is confident his players can secure a win.

“You have sometimes setbacks in seasons, players are injured or for other reasons are not available so you construct a squad and the squad is very good and the players who are available and motivated to give a good performance,” he said.

“It is typical we have two great games in spring against them and we know we have to play tomorrow to our best because they will sacrifice and suffer because it gives you a lot of options so really looking forward.”

“We take the performance [against Arsenal] and also in the last two days, when all the players they came back, we trained very well and we are ready to fight Brighton, a very good Brighton. We are really looking forward to it and we have a good vibe. We are ready for it.’’

Sancho is unavailable while he waits to find out what if any action will be taken by the club after his pat with Ten Hag over his peformances in training. And the Dutchman insisted he will not compromise on his strict rules.

“Strict lines is the point. It’s what the club asked me to do, because there was no good culture before last season. So to set some good standards and that is what I did. That is my job, to control the standards,” the United boss said.

“It has never been when someone makes one mistake, it is a whole process before you come to a certain outcome about strict lines. If staff, players or whoever, if there is a structure to cross lines you have to be strong, absolutely.

“It’s also with the generation, about team construction, the group dynamic and always about the team. That is above everything else, but within that everyone plays his role, there are different characters and you have to manage those characters.”
