Brighton piled on Manchester United’s misery with a teasing social media post following their thumping 3-1 win at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Goals from Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro made it four successive victories for Brighton against United in the Premier League - 10-2 on aggregate - and two of those have come at Old Trafford. The Seagulls are so accustomed to winning at Old Trafford that of the Red Devils’ last 33 home games in all competitions, they’re the only team to have beaten United - and done it twice.

Saturday followed up on last season’s shock 2-1 victory on the opening weekend and Brighton’s X account made sure to remind miserable supporters of Erik ten Hag’s side about their recent record with a cheeky message. “Back-to-back Premier League wins here,” they wrote. “We just love playing at Old Trafford.”

The post garnered nearly 90,000 likes within three hours of being published, as Seagulls supporters and fans of rival clubs made the most of a torrid day for bottom-half United. There was also another milestone in Brighton’s big win, as German midfielder Gross notched his fourth Premier League goal at Old Trafford.

Only Liverpool heroes Steven Gerrard and Mohamed Salah boast more, each scoring five. Gross’ well-taken goal made it 2-0 shortly after half-time, doubling Brighton’s lead after an opener from Welbeck before Pedro hit a sublime effort to wrap up the victory.

United youngster Hannibal Mejbri hit back with a spectacular consolation effort, but by then many fans had left Old Trafford in dismay. For the visitors, it was another memorable day and boss Roberto De Zerbi expressed his delight with the result post-match.

“I must admit I feel I know I’m very lucky to be this coach for this team,” the Italian, who leads his team into Europa League action on Thursday by hosting AEK Athens, beamed to Sky Sports. “It’s like I dream because I am enjoying it a lot, enjoying to watch my team playing, showing their quality. It’s an honour, I’m proud.”

De Zerbi added: “We played a great, great game. We deserved to win, we played well. In the first 15, 20 minutes we suffered a lot because Man United played in a different way than we prepared for but after that we played a great game.”
