Brighton only needed 10 minutes to work out how to beat Manchester United - that’s according to Seagulls duo Jason Steele and Pascal Gross.

The Red Devils slipped to an embarrassing 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Seagulls on Saturday. Former United striker Danny Welbeck gave the visitors the lead at Old Trafford before Rasmus Hojlund had an equaliser controversially ruled out. Gross and Joao Pedro both found the net in the second half. Hannibal Mejbri reduced the deficit but that was not enough to stage a comeback.

Speaking after his side’s victory, goalkeeper Steele said: “It feels great. A great win. Away at Old Trafford, it is an amazing feeling. We deserved it too, we played with courage, with a big heart and definitely deserved to win.

“We want to play on the front foot, aggressively, United played a bit differently to what we expected, so we had to get to grips with that. But after 10-15 minutes we settled down and got a foothold in the game.”

Brighton midfielder Gross agreed with his teammate’s assessment. The German playmaker conceded that while United’s set-up took his side slightly by surprise, they quickly adapted.

He said: “We played a good game, we controlled it really well and deserved to win. We needed to organise ourselves a little bit at the start as they played a different shape. But after we figured it out we were better defensively and were in control on the ball, found spaces and were dangerous on the attack.”

Elsewhere, Red Devils boss Ten Hag has suggested that his side followed his game plan during the opening exchanges but saw players stray shortly after. Speaking after the full-time whistle, the Dutchman said: “Absolutely [the system worked]. The first 20 minutes were very good. We have to stick to the plan [despite the goal] because it worked well. We had quite a few chances.”

The defeat by Brighton leaves the Red Devils languishing in 12th in the Premier League standings. They have lost three out of their opening five matches of the campaign. Ten Hag will be aiming to get his side back on track over the next week. The Red Devils tackle newly-promoted Burnley next weekend.

Before that, they face a tough assignment in their opening Champions League group game against Bayern Munich. Another defeat would consign United to three consecutive losses for the first time under Ten Hag.
