Erik ten Hag was pleased to see his side defeat Burnley

Manchester United finally ended their dreadful run of form by claiming a narrow win at Burnley on Saturday night.

But while United got their season back on track at Turf Moor, boss Erik ten Hag was not totally happy with his side. The Dutchman insisted that his troops need to continue to improve if they are to truly be back fighting for the top four.

He was pleased with the fight his team showed though, which was needed as they battled against Vincent Kompany’s impressive Clarets. Ten Hag also has his eyes on the transfer window though, with the Red Devils linked with Brentford star Aaron Hickey.

Their potential move for the Scotland international comes as Marcus Rashford responded to criticism from Stuart Pearce about his work ethic. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Manchester United news.

Ten Hag admits Burnley relief

Erik ten Hag admitted he relief at seeing Manchester United come away with a much-needed three points from Burnley. But the Dutchman also reiterated his demand that his squad ‘follow the rules’ he sets.

“It was clear. Of course we needed that win. We had a tough run of games against good opponents. It wasn’t necessary to lose those games. Today was must-win,” the United boss told BBC Sport.

“The team spirit and how they fight together [was impressive]. But if you want to win you have to do it consistently. Last year we had the most clean sheets in the Premier League. We were disciplined and followed the rules. When we do that it’s difficult to play against Manchester United.”

Manchester United are in a three-way transfer battle over Brentford star Aaron Hickey. The fullback has starred for the Bees since joining from Bologna and is now attracting interest from several top Premier League sides.

United are now preparing to make a bid for the Scotland international, but are facing competition from Arsenal and Liverpool. Bayern Munich are also eyeing the Scot, who is able to play on both flanks.

But all four teams will find it tough to negotiate a deal with Brentford, who are expected to sell Ivan Toney in January. With a hefty fee being brought in for the striker, boss Thomas Frank will be loath to also lose Hickey.

Rashford speaks out after criticism

Marcus Rashford has admitted United are in a “difficult position” as he demanded more consistency from his team-mates. The attacker was slammed for his work ethic by Stuart Pearce in midweek and Rashford conceded he needed to show more.

“It’s a difficult position and I’m not as happy as I’d like to be, but there’s only one way to get back this happiness is to seek results. We know the effect that a victory can have on the team and then it’s up to the players to show consistency,” he said.

“We’re not scoring as many goals and conceding more. If we try to be a little more compact and help the players on the left or the right, then yes, the attackers may have less chances compared to last season, but if we are solid defensively, I think we can score against any team in the world.”
