Eddie Howe will be delighted with his Newcastle United side’s incredibly dominant away performance that saw them put eight goals past a hapless Sheffield United outfit
Newcastle had far too much for Sheffield United to handle
Newcastle have broken a Premier League record following their emphatic, dominant 8-0 win away at Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon.
The Magpies made top flight history by having eight different goalscorers - the most seen in any single Premier League fixture. EIGHT goal, scored with a ruthless swagger, in a remarkable, historic Newcastle performance.
Eddie Howe’s men claimed the club’s biggest ever away win and equalled their biggest ever Premier League win. Eight (eight), nil. Eight goals, from eight different players.
Kieran Trippier grabbed a hat-trick of assists, Antony Gordon ran riot, Bruno Guimaraes scored one and made one. This was Howe’s side hitting last season’s heights and at their fluid and powerful best.
But this game was mind-boggling not just for Newcastle’s energy and creativity, bouncing back from their Champions League draw in the San Siro. It was one of the most shameful, inept home performances in Premier League history.
Paul Heckingbottom was let down by his lacklustre players, and after six defeats in seven games so far this season may not be in the job for many more hours. Newcastle fell one goal short of matching Leicester City’s 0-9 record away victory against Southampton in October 2019.
Added to the scale of the defeat Sheffield could face sanctions for their bottle throwing fans, with Elliot Anderson hit on the foot by one missile. Newcastle steamed to three goals in 14 first half minutes and should have also had a penalty.

Bruno Guimaraes bagged Newcastle’s seventh
Sean Longstaff fired Newcastle ahead after a rocky start which saw Harvey Barnes limp off injured after ten minutes. Longstaff is in the side instead of big summer signing Sandro Tonali, adding box to box energy.
He was on the spot 12 yards out to ping home a pullback from Anthony Gordon, who only kept the ball in play by millimeters, after it bounced up and hit his hand. The VAR check was passed.
Newcastle ran riot. Dan Burn muscled his way to the back post despite having his shirt pulled and dived to head home Trippier’s corner. Three minutes later Trippier bagged his second assist, sweeping a free kick into the box for defender Sven Botman to flick home with his head for his first goal for the club in his 50th appearance.

That triggered a dangerous moment from Newcastle’s players as they were pelted by missiles from the home terraces. At least three bottles full of liquid were hurled, one smashing Elliot Anderson on his foot. Sheffield could face sanctions. Then a bizarre VAR ruling. Anthony Gordon was clearly tripped by Jayden Bogle and ref Stuart Attwell waited for the video check, which ruled play on.
It felt like the officials were deciding to stay low key in the face of crowd hostility rather than getting the correct decision. This time they were not game deciding errors, as Callum Wilson added a fourth after the break. Botman unlocked the defence by releasing Trippier who clipped in a cross, first time.
Wilson was eight yards out and powered home with his head. At last. He could have had a first half hat-trick. By this point the home side were woeful. Anel Ahmedhodzic gave Anthony Gordon the freedom of the left wing, and didn’t lay a boot on him. Gordon exploited this by taking Elliot Anderson’s pass, cutting inside and curling home from 25 yards for the goal of the game to make it five.

Then it was six. Bruno Guimaraes ran the show in midfield and weighted a lovely ball into Miggy Almiron’s path for the winger to smash home his first of the season. Seven? Why not, because the home defence had largely given up.
Sub Alexander Isak competed for the ball, Longstaff’s shot was blocked and fell for Guimaraes to stroke home. He celebrated with the ball up his shirt. Another baby on the way?
Eight? Now it was getting ridiculous. In the 87th minute Isak was worked free in the box and teased hapless keeper Wes Foderingham to complete the riot. The rout equalled Newcastle’s biggest ever win in the Premier League… 8-0 at home to the other Sheffield outfit, Wednesday in September 1999.
