Man Utd got their season back on track with Burnley victory Football Digest

Jonny Evans believes Erik ten Hag is doing a fine job at Manchester United, despite the club’s poor start to the season.

Ten Hag, 53, arrived at Old Trafford last summer and enjoyed a fine maiden season at the helm, winning the League Cup back in February and steering the club back into the Champions League. Pressure has been growing on the Dutchman, though, in the wake of United’s poor start to the 2023/24 campaign.

Prior to Saturday night’s 1-0 win over Burnley, the Red Devils had won just two of their opening five Premier League matches and were comprehensively beaten 3-1 by Brighton at Old Trafford last weekend. United also lost their opening Champions League group match against Bayern Munich in midweek.

But Evans, who was brought back to the club for a second spell in the summer, has spoken out in defence of Ten Hag in the wake of United’s triumph at Turf Moor.

“The manager’s got a good thing going here,” the veteran defender said. “I’m a fan of the club so I was able to watch them a lot last year, been at both finals to support. Like I say, I think the manager’s got a good thing going.”

Evans won three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his first stint at the club, which came to an end back in 2015. He went on to insist that bad times are par for the course when you’re at such a big club.

He added: “I’ve had some up and down moments at Man Utd over the years. I think you get that if you want to be at the top. You know, it’s going to be very up and down. You’ve got to be able to deal with setbacks and this club is a fantastic club, always want to be challenging at the top, so it’s all part and parcel of it.”

As well as underwhelming results, Ten Hag has also been plagued by a number of off-field issues already this term. The latest, a public bust-up with Jadon Sancho, has seen the culture of the Manchester United dressing room thrust back into the spotlight.

However, a new report from The Telegraph outlined that club chief executive Richard Arnold stressed that Ten Hag retains the full support of the Manchester United hierarchy at an extraordinary meeting last week.

Ten Hag admitted after the chastening defeat against Brighton that he was aware of the growing pressure upon him. He said: “The pressure is always there. It was last year and this year is no different.

“Of course, at United, you have to win your games. We have to improve and I can’t be distracted. We have to improve. Individuals have to step up. Sometimes you are in bad periods and you have to face that.”
