Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat at Tottenham was “unfair” as Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota both saw red during a dramatic Premier League clash in north London

Jurgen Klopp has slammed the officials after Liverpool’s last-gasp 2-1 defeat at Tottenham - and admitted he has never seen a more “unfair” game.

The Reds went down to 10-men mid-way through the first-half when Curtis Jones was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on Yves Bissouma. Jones was initially handed a yellow card, but VAR urged referee Simon Hooper to have another look, and he overturned his initial decision to send the Liverpool midfielder off.

Tottenham took the lead moments later as Richarlison’s cross was turned home from close-range by Son Heung-min. However, despite being a man down, Liverpool levelled just before the break through Cody Gakpo, who swivelled inside the box and fired the ball into the back of the net.

Liverpool managed to control the game well during the second period, but their task became harder when Diogo Jota was handed a second yellow card in quick succession. Klopp’s men, again, defended superbly, up until the 97th minute as Tottenham found a winner, with Joel Matip sweeping the ball into his own net.

Klopp was seething after the full-time whistle and criticised the match officials as Liverpool suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season. He told Sky Sports: “I was never more proud of the team than today. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions.

“We scored an own goal, that is really tough to take but I am really proud. The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle. It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky.

“[For Diogo Jota] first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with nine players is tricky. You want to build something you need players with mentality and I saw them today, they fought. Pretty special tonight.”

There was another controversial moment during the game when Luis Diaz’s first-half strike was ruled out for offside, when replays showed it looked like Diaz was in fact onside. Klopp delivered his opinion on that incident and added: “The offside goal. That is not offside when you see it, they drew their lines wrong.

“The ball is between Mo’s legs, they drew the line wrong and didn’t judge the moment when Mo passed the ball right. It is so tough to deal with it.”
