Sheffield Wednesday have axed manager Xisco Munoz 10 games into the Championship season with the Owls sat bottom after the worst start to a campaign in their history
Xisco Munoz’s final game was defeat at West Brom
Sheffield Wednesday have sacked boss Xisco Munoz after just 10 game of the season with the Owls sat bottom of the Championship.
The Spaniard’s final game in charge was Tuesday night’s defeat at West Brom, the club’s eighth defeat in ten having gone winless so far. It leaves Wednesday with just two points, already seven points from safety with those at Hillsborough opting for a change.
Munoz was only appointed in the summer as the club sought a replacement for Darren Moore, who left despite leading the Owls to League One promotion via the play-offs. His backroom staff - Miguel Munoz, Miguel Gomila, Roberto Cuesta Roman and Antonello Brambilla - also leave the club.
Speaking after the loss at the Hawthorns the Spaniard apologised for the side’s poor form. He told BBC Radio Sheffield: “Frustrated. Just frustrated. I am working every day at full power. We try to give the best for the team and I can understand the situation. All I can say is sorry, we will continue working and we need your support for the team. I can understand the fans. All I can do is say sorry.”
Owner Dejphon Chansiri is now looking for another new manager as the Yorkshire outfit attempt to retain their status in the second tier. The controversial figure recently hit out at the fans for their reaction to him, stating he wouldn’t be putting any more money into the club.
He said: “From now, I will not put additional money into the club,” before going on to add: “I am the one who saved the club and spent the money for the club, I am the one who needs to pay around £2m on average every month.
The Owls have struggled throughout the opening weeks of the season
“Some fans need to have more respect for owners of clubs and not be so selfish, thinking of their own benefit without doing anything good to the club. Those fans who create trouble to the club and myself and believe that they are the real owner of the club need to be responsible for the financial matters of the club from now on.”
Wednesday will host Huddersfield in a Yorkshire derby at the weekend as they look to get their first win of the season. Under-21s manager Neil Thompson will take the team as they begin the process of appointing a new manager.
