Scott McTominay has joked that he couldn’t hear what Erik ten Hag said to him - but claimed he probably asked him to “go and score”.

The Manchester United midfielder was bought on with three minutes of the 90 remaining and notched twice in stoppage time. The second came on 97 minutes, to rescue three points for the hosts, who were facing the prospect of three home league defeats on the trot.

McTominay is by no means a mercurial goal threat for the Red Devils and has struggled to make himself a starter under Ten Hag, but came up trumps to prevent his side falling to a third defeat in the space of a week.

The Scot claimed he could barely hear what is manager was asking from him, but knew the gist of what he’d be demanding. He told Premier League Productions: “It was very loud, the fans were roaring us on so I couldn’t hear fully. He probably said something like: ‘Go on and score,’ which is what I did.”

McTominay had been linked with the exit door back in the summer as he slipped down the pecking order but was pleased to underline his value. “That might be one of my favourite moments on a football pitch,” he added. “Two goals at the death was incredible, but I am just happy to be able to contribute and show people that I can do it.”

United avoided a fifth defeat in eight league games and instead stay in touch with their rivals, who still hold a notable advantage at this early stage of the season. Those on the red half of Manchester are in the midst of a difficult period but McTominay hailed the spirit within the squad.

He said on the win: “Massive. Everyone knows we are in a difficult period at the minute, but we have fighters in the group that want to keep going right until the end. It could have been anyone on that pitch scoring the two goals. Really pleased and hopefully we can build on that from here.

“Sometimes we feel like we are in our own bubble with people outside only saying negative things, but we just have to block that out and be better after the international break.” The Premier League will pause for a fortnight with United taking on Sheffield United, who are yet to win a game, when they return.
