Ten Hag says ‘Man Utd in heart’ of matchwinner McTominay

David de Gea was a world away from the drama at Manchester United as his absence came to the fore again during the dramatic win over Brentford.

The former Old Trafford No 1 left the club in the summer in controversial circumstances as his deal was allowed to run down. He remains without a club despite his stock being incredibly high at the peak of his career and hinted he has little interest in keeping tabs on his former side.

De Gea has been replaced by Andre Onana, who has made a host of errors since joining from Inter Milan with some questioning the decision to axe the Spaniard.

Onana found himself under the spotlight once more despite Scott McTominay scoring twice in stoppage time to spare his blushes. The Cameroon international was beaten in the first-half by Mathias Jensen, whose shot beat Onana centrally with the ball going under his arm.

And while that was all unfolding, De Gea uploaded a picture of himself playing Call of Duty on Saturday afternoon with the word “perfect timing” alongside two hands pulling the middle finger.

The former Inter man has made notable errors against the likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Galatasaray - all which have cost United with Erik ten Hag having to defend his new goalkeeper.

The decision to pursue Onana was seen as a tactical shift with De Gea’s limitations at playing out seen as a problem, which Ten Hag hinted at previously. He said: “He’s a great goalkeeper and has a different profile. That’s why we wanted to sign him. With him, something will change in our game.”

When De Gea’s departure was announced the goalkeeper stated his desire to pursue a new challenge. He wrote on social media: “I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt. To lead the team, to represent this institution - the biggest club in the world - was an honour only bestowed upon a few lucky footballers. Now it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings.”

De Gea had struggled in his final season, despite claiming the Golden Glove. His errors cost United in Europe as they were sent packing by Sevilla whilst he made high profile mistakes against the likes of Brentford earlier in the season.
