Liverpool were held to a draw at Brighton but opinion is divided after the hosts avoided a red card following a first-half incident with Jurgen Klopp not giving much away

Jurgen Klopp said “don’t talk to me about rules” when he was quizzed on the decision not to hand Brighton a red card in their draw with Liverpool.
The Reds were held at the Amex as Lewis Dunk bagged a late equaliser after Mohamed Salah’s brace had put the visitors ahead. The Egyptian’s second came from the spot after the referee gave a penalty for a pull back on Dominik Szoboszlai by Pascal Gross.
He wasn’t even booked despite the suggestion that he denied a clear goalscoring opportunity. Klopp, who has been dealt horrific luck with officials in the past week following VAR’s howler at Tottenham last weekend, decided not to get into the intricacies on why no card was given.
He told Sky Sports after the game: “I don’t know, I have no idea. I think the foul is in the box and he got a yellow card, but if it was outside? I don’t know. Don’t talk to me about rules, I take what I get.”
Dunk, who was coming round on the cover, doesn’t believe that the hosts should’ve lost a man as he said: “No not really. I think I was covering and there were others covering. We had a good 40 minutes and a mad five minutes that killed us at the end of the half. I think we did well in the second half.”
Liverpool and refereeing decisions have been the talking point all week amid calls from Klopp that their loss at Tottenham last weekend should be the subject of a replay due to its unprecedented circumstances. Virgil van Dijk admits he was surprised Gross didn’t get booked after the penalty, but chose to move on.

“On the pitch you are thinking about this and you have to be careful for asking if was going to get sent off,” said the Dutchman. “I was curious for the reason why he didn’t get a booking. I didn’t see any replays on the pitch. We win the penalty, we score the penalty and the ref didn’t give a yellow or a red. We have to accept it.”
Liverpool failed to beat the Seagulls in three games last term, losing 3-0 in their league visit to the Amex. The point keeps them within touching distance of top spot and Klopp was impressed with their display, particularly in the second 45.
He said: “Second half we played outstanding attack ended up with Ryan Gravenberch nailing the crossbar. I don’t think Brighton would have given up but it would have helped us for sure. Everyone who came on, it was hard to get the rhythm of the game and so it’s a draw. That’s it.”
