Mason Greenwood has been informed that he will not play for Manchester United again - regardless of how well he performs at Getafe.

The 22-year-old joined the La Liga side on a season-long loan on deadline day after the Red Devils decided it was best that Greenwood should “continue his career away from Old Trafford”. He hadn’t previously played football since January 2022, with charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in February of this year.

Since his move to the Coliseum, Greenwood has made five appearances, scoring his first goal during Getafe’s 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo before the international break. According to The Sun, Greenwood is keen to make his move permanent, though it is understood Sevilla are interested in the forward.

Regardless, he will not be continuing at Old Trafford, as per The Express. The United hierarchy have made it evident that they envisage a different path for Greenwood, who still has over 18 months left on his current deal in Manchester.

The Red Devils have instead put together a number of steps for Greenwood to progress his career away from Old Trafford, having also spoken privately to the one-time England international. Greenwood scored 35 goals in 139 matches for United after coming through the club’s youth system.

Speaking at a Fans’ Forum last week, United Chief Executive Richard Arnold explained why the club chose to make the decision they made. “With Mason, as I am sure you can appreciate, this was an extremely difficult and complex situation,” Arnold said.

“We conducted a detailed investigation over several months, considering all the evidence available. The evidence presented to us contained important facts that were not in the public domain. I made the ultimate decision as CEO that Mason’s career should continue elsewhere.

“It is true that my decision evolved over time, but I believe we came to the right conclusion for all parties. However, I can assure you that we have listened to the feedback and criticism and there are learnings that we can take forward.

“We have already applied some of the lessons during our handling of the Antony case - for example, by consulting Women’s Aid to ensure that the perspective of domestic abuse survivors was considered in our decision.”
