Sir Bobby Charlton remember

Manchester United fans applauded and sang loudly as they paid an emotional tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton following his death.

The former Red Devil and England legend passed away on Saturday at the age of 86 - his family confirmed that he had died. The news came just hours before Man United’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United.

The club staged a number of touching tributes for Charlton before the game. A minute’s applause was held just before kick-off, while both sides wore black armbands. Fans also chanted “One Bobby Charlton”.

A wreath was laid at the Trinity Statue that immortalises Charlton alongside George Best and Dennis Law outside of Old Trafford. A book of condolence will also be available for fans to sign on Sunday.

A statement from Man United read: “Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club. Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.

“He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game. A graduate of our youth academy, Sir Bobby played 758 games and scored 249 goals during 17 years as a Manchester United player, winning the European Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup. For England, he won 106 caps and scored 49 goals, and won the 1966 World Cup.

“Following his retirement, he went on to serve the club with distinction as a director for 39 years. His unparalleled record of achievement, character and service will be forever etched in the history of Manchester United and English football; and his legacy will live on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation. The club’s heartfelt sympathies are with his wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him.”

The Red Devils were not the only club in the country to pay tribute to Charlton. An impromptu round of applause broke out during Birmingham City’s Championship clash with Middlesbrough at the Riverside on Saturday, followed by a rendition of ‘There’s only one Bobby Charlton’.

Man United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney was in attendance after being appointed as Birmingham manager. Speaking after the game, he said: “Sir Bobby was always great with me, we had conversations not just about football but about life. He’s a huge loss to football and a huge loss to his family, more importantly. He’ll be greatly missed.” A number of clubs and stars also penned touching tributes to Charlton after his death was announced.
