Former Netherlands international Ruud Gullit has accused the Manchester United players of ‘not looking’ for Rasmus Hojlund, with the forward still without a Premier League goal

Ruud Gullit does not believe the Manchester United players are “looking” for Rasmus Hojlund as the forward’s wait for a Premier League goal goes on.

The 20-year-old has failed to find the net in six top-flight matches since his summer move from Atalanta after drawing a blank in their 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday. Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot scored either side of Ollie McBurnie’s equaliser to secure a vital three points for Erik ten Hag’s men.

But it proved to be another frustrating outing for Hojlund, who had just two shots before he was substituted for Anthony Martial with the scores level. His best chance came just before half-time as he manoeuvred some space on the edge of the six-yard box but his effort was saved by Wes Foderingham.

After the match, ex-Netherlands midfielder Gullit has delivered his verdict on Hojlund’s form and thinks that the United squad are not playing the ball to the striker. “I still think you have to get your striker on the scoresheet,” Gullit told Premier League Productions.

“Because if he gets on the scoresheet he gets confidence, then also the rest are looking for him all the time. They don’t look for him as much. And he’s in areas where you can have a look at him.

“You see too many players too eager to score themselves, they’re coming inside, they want to hit the target all the time. I played with [Marco] Van Basten, I always thought if I give it to him it’s a goal, if I hit it then it could be a goal. I’d rather give it to him because it’s a definite goal. You know strikers, they’re selfish, they need to score goals. If he’s happy in the team that makes a huge difference for the rest.”

Despite not finding the net in the Premier League, Hojlund has scored three times in two Champions League games so far this season. He is set to continue his place up front for United’s game against Copenhagen on Tuesday.

After United’s win over Sheffield United, Ten Hag admitted he is still trying to manage Hojlund’s minutes after missing the first three matches due to injury. “You see he plays often whole games but behind us we have to manage his game minutes,” Ten Hag said.

“Coming up are many games. So we are now in October but until the end of the season there are so many games and we need everyone on board, we need everyone sharp and to keep them sharp.

“If I saw the programme for the coming weeks, we have to swap during games, between games, otherwise we don’t keep the energy, we don’t keep the focus in the team and we don’t get them so fresh for every game.

“Also, we want to do something with subs to bring a new energy into the team and from a tactical approach we want to do something.”
