Manchester City have suspended two supporters from all home and away fixtures following offensive chants about Sir Bobby Charlton.
Charlton, the former Manchester United player, passed away at the age of 86 last Saturday. He also achieved World Cup glory with England in 1966.
Chants were heard in parts of the Etihad Stadium during City’s victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. The Premier League champions expressed their “disappointment” and moved to condemn the chants, adding that the security team would study “CCTV footage of the concourse areas” to identify those responsible.
Following a club investigation, City have now taken action to ban the fans involved.
A statement read: “Manchester City can confirm that two minors have been identified in connection with the vile chanting heard at the Etihad Stadium during half-time of last weekend’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion.
“The individuals in question have subsequently been suspended from attending all home or away fixtures and their details have been shared with Greater Manchester Police who are investigating the matter.
“Following the conclusion of Greater Manchester Police’s ongoing investigation, the individuals will be subject to the club’s official sanctions and bans process.”
Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
This Sunday, City will face their rivals United at Old Trafford. Before the game, a minute’s applause will be held to commemorate the life of Charlton.
