VAR almost had another blunder which ended with the officials clashing at Stockley Park as they looked to determine whether or not Burnley should be awarded a goal
VAR took over five minutes to make a decision
The VAR officials were ‘arguing with each other’ as they attempted to determine whether or not Jay Rodriguez was onside during Bournemouth’s win over Burnley.
The Clarets were trailing to the Cherries when the forward thought he’d levelled the contest, albeit replays suggested he looked offside. Originally the goal was given before VAR David Coote intervened and allegedly clashed with his colleague at Stockley Park.
He took issue with the lines, which didn’t appear to be drawn on straight whilst they measured Rodriguez’s position from the wrong part of his body. The check took more than five minutes, leading to chants of “this is embarrassing” from the crowd, who weren’t aware of the scenes in the VAR room.
Clinton Morrison, who was covering the game on Soccer Saturday, gave a running commentary of the incident with footage of the game and those doing VAR.
He said on Sky Sports: “Onside, onside. I’ve seen the green light come on. Hold on, it looks like they’re having an argument. It looks like they’re rowing in the VAR [room]. The green light come on and they said it was onside and now they’ve gone back again and they’re undecided.”
The former Premier League striker then added: ”David Coote’s still in there now pointing at the screen saying, can you draw the line straight. And they’re not doing it. It’s too long.”

Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly looked as if he might have been playing the Burnley man onside, but the decision was relatively routine and the length of time to make the decision was labelled as “embarrassing”. VAR have landed themselves in hot water this season, particularly with their Tottenham - Liverpool blunder.
Morrison then added: “As long as it’s the right decision, I don’t care if it takes 10 minutes… they rushed one at Tottenham-Liverpool earlier in the season and that was a complete catastrophe, so at least if they’ve took the time and got the decision right, I’d rather they do that.”
Chris Sutton, who was watching the game for BBC, joked: “Maybe in the VAR hub they’ve all nipped out for a cup of tea? Crazy for it take that long. The sooner we get to the semi-automated system the better. Whether they’ve come to the right decision, who knows.”
