Hull City edged out Preston North End to move into the Championship top six at the expense of their out-of-form opponents at the MKM Stadium.

A tepid game failed to get going until midway into the second half when Hull made the breakthrough courtesy of Jaden Philogene.

His goal came after he raced into the box and, as Preston failed to close him down, he fired in left footed off the post.

The result means Preston’s winless run extends to seven games as they drop to eighth, while Hull moved into sixth position thanks to a second win on the bounce.

Preston’s unenviable run of form comes after they had started the season with an unbeaten eight-game run which had included six victories.

After a first half of few chances limped to a close, the second period finally saw both sides challenge for the game’s opener.

Ched Evans found Alan Browne in space as Preston went on the attack and the ball was eventually worked to Liam Millar whose shot was well blocked by Adama Traore.

Just minutes later, however, the hosts got off the mark thanks to Philogene who scored his third goal of the season and third in his past four games for the club.

Preston were unable to find a response however, as Ryan Lowe’s side slipped to a fourth defeat from their past six games.
