Former Manchester City goalkeeper David James told BBC Radio Manchester’s We’re Not Really Here podcast that Sunday’s win at Old Trafford “will ‘scare the living daylights” out of the rest of the Premier League: “Quite often we associate dominance with scorelines and 3-0 at Old Trafford is obviously a good scoreline. But it was the way that City controlled the ball. They didn’t have to do any more.
“Erling Haaland could have got a hat-trick - his first away from home - but for the third goal he instead squares it to Phil Foden. That’s how confident this team is - it was beautiful.
“I don’t like the idea that United are a bad team and that’s why City played well. I think good teams make average teams look poor, make great teams look average and they made Man Utd look less than average.
“What we saw was Manchester United doing their normal stuff for the season and Manchester City stepping up a gear. If there is any way Pep Guardiola can maintain this sort of performance, although I would imagine it will maybe dip and even get better on occasions.
“Whatever happens, this kind of performance is going to scare the living daylights out of the rest of the Premier League.
“The reason I talk about the fear going round the Premier League and Europe arguably is that when City are switched on, they can put in that type of performance.”
