Michael Owen does not feel as though Manchester United have overpaid for promising Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund even though they splashed out a jaw-dropping £72million for his signature this summer.
Despite impressing with his general play, Hojlund is yet to score in the Premier League from eight early-season outing. However, the 20-year-old does already have three Champions League goals to his name in United colours.
Having allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to depart midway through last season, United waited to replace their iconic five-time Ballon d’Or winner. Harry Kane was their prime target but United side-stepped a possible move for the England captain as they instead pursued and signed Hojlund.

The former Atalanta frontman has largely been unable to make his mark in front of goal this campaign, but Hojlund has earned plaudits for his work-rate, build-up play and ability to combine with teammates. Owen wants that to be factored in when people assess the young Dane and his eventual worth to the squad.
Speaking with AceOdds.com, ex-United striker Owen said: “Manchester United have done their homework and he [Hojlund] does appear to be somebody that could be a fantastic player in the future. You would normally associate spending that kind of money on somebody that’s going to guarantee you 30 goals every season.

“Yes, they’ve had to pay through the nose for a kid, but they haven’t paid hundreds of millions for him. So it’s only what happens in business all the time. If somebody’s young and looks like they could be good, there’s a premium to pay.”
After initially making his way in Denmark as a young player Hojlund signed for Sturm Graz in January 2022 and did enough in six months there to earn a move to Atalanta. He scored 10 goals in 34 games for the Italians last season before United came calling.
