Wayne Rooney hopes Marcus Rashford builds Man Utd legacy after new deal

Andre Onana has set his sights on winning the Champions League with Manchester United as he prepares to finalise his £47million switch from Inter Milan.

Onana, 27, emerged as United’s top goalkeeper target after the Old Trafford hierarchy failed to come to an agreement with former No.1 David de Gea, who has since left the club as a free agent. And after weeks of negotiations, Onana is poised to complete his move to the Premier League giants with a medical scheduled for Wednesday.

The Cameroon international played a starring role in Inter Milan’s run to the Champions League final and was a standout performer in the 1-0 loss against Manchester City last month.

And Onana has made it clear that he wants to make amends by challenging for Europe’s most coveted trophy at his new club.

Before boarding a flight to England on Tuesday night, Onana admitted to Italian media that the prospect of linking up with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United was an irresistible prospect.

Onana said: “Now I really want to start this new experience, it’s exciting and with a coach who for me is a master. I will go to a great league and a great club, which has a huge history just like that of Inter: I will start from scratch and give everything every day to show the new fans who I am.” He then added: “Personally, I hope to win the Champions League with United.”

Onana was a key part of the Ajax side that dominated domestically during Ten Hag’s reign in Amsterdam. But the duo went their separate ways last summer when Onana joined Inter as a free agent shortly after Ten Hag was lured to Old Trafford last summer.

Signing a new goalkeeper became a priority for Ten Hag with De Gea’s future up in the air. The veteran Spanish shot-stopper landed the Premier League Golden Glove award for keeping the most clean sheets last term but he also produced a string of high-profile errors that cost Manchester United vital points.

Onana will become United’s second summer signing once the formalities of his transfer are wrapped up over the coming days. Mason Mount became the club’s first capture when he put pen-to-paper on a £60m move from Chelsea earlier this month.

Ten Hag is now set to turn his attention to signing a new striker, with Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund at the top of his wishlist. United may have to raise funds, though, in order to strike a deal with the Italian outfit, who are expected to demand in excess of £60m for the 20-year-old Denmark international.
