Harry Maguire’s proposed transfer to West Ham could be in jeopardy

Concerns are growing over Harry Maguire and his proposed £30million switch to West Ham as Manchester United continue to keep track of their Financial Fair Play commitments.

The Red Devils have to raise funds through player sales after shelling out big money on deals for Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund already this summer.

Maguire, who was stripped of the club captaincy last month, has been tipped to move on from Old Trafford amid interest from United’s Premier League rivals. The England star has been given permission to speak to the Hammers, but an official agreement over a move has yet to be signed off between all three parties.

Now, The Mail are reporting that United are keeping a close eye on their FFP restrictions after they were fined £257,000 for a minor breach back in July. The club know they need to sell before doing business, but that hasn’t stopped them from pressing ahead with attempts to line up a potential replacement for Maguire.

And while United are eyeing up the likes of Benjamin Pavard and Jean-Clair Todibo, West Ham are exploring alternatives to Maguire as talks over a deal continue to drag on.

That’s according to The Telegraph, who claim that the Hammers have concerns over the delay, which is reportedly down to an issue involving Maguire and Manchester United rather than anything to do with West Ham themselves.

Maguire was an unused substitute in Manchester United’s slender 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday night - even though Lisandro Martinez was withdrawn at half-time, with Erik ten Hag instead turning to Victor Lindelof.

The Dutchman’s latest snub towards Maguire comes just days after he bluntly told the defender to leave the club if he wasn’t up to regaining his place in the team.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s match, Ten Hag said of Maguire: “For Harry, he has to fight for his place. He has the ability to be a top-class centre-back, he is the best for England so why shouldn’t he be the best for us?

“But he has to prove it. When he is not confident enough to go with that fight then he has to go, he has to make the decision. But I am happy with him.

“We don’t have a squad with 11 players. Last year proved definitely we need all the players, so you need high-level players who are maybe not starting but that can change, so there is an internal competition and everyone has to fight for his place.”

He continued: “For many players that counts, when they are good they will get their games but no one can play all the games and finally, you find out what is the best team. In the squad now, all the positions are double and every player has the perspective to fight for his place. Then you have to show with your contribution it’s the best team performance. It is up to the players if they have the game time or less.”
