Football Digest: Analysing Man Utd’s failed recruitment

Brandon Williams looks set to bid farewell to his Manchester United career after his loan move to Ipswich was confirmed.

The left-back has joined the Championship side on a loan deal until the end of the current campaign after falling out of favour at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old finds himself behind Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia in the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.

Whilst the deal is only a temporary one, Williams’ move to Portman Road looks set to bring a permanent end to his Red Devils’ career. The defender’s loan deal includes an option for Ipswich to buy him permanently.

Whilst it remains to be seen whether that is activated over the next 12 months, a permanent exit looks likely. His current United deal expires next summer, although the Red Devils have an option to extend that by an extra season.

Speaking after his move to Ipswich was made official, Williams said: “Kieran [McKenna] was my youth-team coach at United and, from there, we have had a great relationship. He has always had the standards of a coach at the top level and has had a big influence on me.

“He has always kept in touch with me to make sure I’m okay and I trust everything he says because he is great to learn off. I’m excited to work with him again.”

Should a permanent deal be pushed through, Williams would leave Old Trafford having amassed 51 appearances for Man United since graduating from the club’s youth academy. He broke through into the first team during the 2019/20 campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, opportunities dried up following the Norwegian’s exit, with Williams subsequently sent out on-loan to Ipswich’s East Anglian rivals Norwich during the 2021/22 campaign. He made 29 appearances for the Canaries but failed to help them retain their place in the Premier League.

The young defender has made just one appearance since then - that coming in the form of a five-minute cameo in a Carabao Cup win over Burnley last term. Williams will now turn his attention to assisting Ipswich following their first season back in the Championship.

The Tractor Boys have enjoyed an eye-catching return to the second tier having won each of their opening three league fixtures. They are back in action this weekend as they take on relegated Leeds United, who are yet to win a league game this season.

Williams could potentially make his Ipswich debut against Leeds. Following that clash, they then take on Reading in the second round of the Carabao Cup ahead of a showdown with Cardiff before the first international break of the campaign.
