Reaction to England penalty save

Manchester United have rebuffed a world-record bid for Lionesses star Mary Earps following her stunning showings at the World Cup.

The 30-year-old shone in Australia and New Zealand throughout the summer as Sarina Wiegman’s side reached the final against Spain. Despite coming unstuck 1-0 in the final, Earps’ performances continued to be of the highest standard.

She claimed the golden glove after the final, whilst also denying Jenni Hermoso from the spot. Her performances throughout the tournament have not gone unnoticed, with interest cranking up in her signature. According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils have turned down an offer for Earps.

It is not detailed which club has tabled the offer but it is reported that the bid is suggested to be a world record for a goalkeeper in the women’s game. Earps has just one year remaining on her Man United contract. She was previously set to be out of contract this summer, only for the Red Devils to trigger a year’s extension.

Even before that, Earps admitted that her future at the club was far from secure. “I think it’s a little uncertain and I think it’s something that’s evolving,” she confirmed to Forbes.

“The conversations [with United] are happening so we’ll have to see how it pans out. I want to play Champions League football and that’s kind of how I feel so we’ll just have to see how everything unfolds, I think. Time will tell with that one.”

United boss Marc Skinner suggested that the club were keen on even more talks over an extended stay. “Our options are for the club [to trigger],” he said.

“We’re actually in the conversation with Mary about renegotiation too. It’s something we’re looking towards, she’s someone I personally have a lot of time for. We’re looking at that because she’s a huge part of what we do.”

Former Lionesses star Fara Williams has warned the Red Devils that Earps could be tempted to leave the club if they don’t match her ambition. Speaking earlier this summer, she said: “For someone like Mary Earps – who is in the form of her career probably to date – she’ll be wanting Manchester United to show real ambition with some of their signings.

“She spoke at the end of the Liverpool game and she said they need to strengthen in all areas of the pitch [and] they need to make their squad more competitive if they are to compete next year again and challenge for that title.”

“I’m sure Mary Earps will be looking at it and going: ‘Who are we bringing in?’ For her, if they don’t show any ambition this year, I’m sure Mary will be looking to go to a club that is showing more ambition, for sure,” she added.
