Chester FC fans sing sickening Lucy Letby chant during match against Hereford
Chester City supporters taunted rival Hereford United fans with a sick Lucy Letby chant at a match between the clubs, it has emerged.
City have condemned the actions of those accused of singing, ‘Lucy Letby, she’s one of your own’, during their 2-1 National League North defeat at the Deva Stadium on Tuesday night and said they were reviewing CCTV footage to identify the culprits.
Letby, who was born in Hereford, was convicted last month of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six other infants while working as a neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
Now serving multiple whole-life terms, the 33-year-old has been dubbed the most prolific child serial killer in modern British history following a trial that heard she had poisoned two victims with insulin, injected some with air, and force-fed others milk.
One user of social media site X identifying herself as a Chester season-ticket holder posted after Tuesday’s game: “Chant I didn’t expect to hear tonight: ‘Lucy Letby she’s one of your own’.”
A user of fan forum Deva Chat wrote on the latter: “What was with the Lucy Letby she’s one of your own chants? May well be from Hereford but went uni, lived and committed the murders in Chester.
“Some of the young lads need a head wobble.”
Another responded: “Oh FFS, they didn’t did they? The person next to them in the stand could have lost a child to her, for all they know. More dreadful publicity for the club if that gets out.”
New rules on tragedy chanting were adopted across the professional and semi-professional game in England at the beginning of the season.
Chants about tragedies, such as the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster or the 1958 Munich Air Crash, are also now a criminal offence, with anyone involved risking arrest and prosecution.
Chester FC vice-chairman Jim Green said: “Chester FC condemns the appalling chant heard during our match with Hereford.
“We are ashamed to be associated with anyone responsible for the chant and will be reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved and take the appropriate action.
“It is reprehensible behaviour and demonstrates a deeply concerning lack of compassion, understanding and decency.
“The impact of Lucy Letby’s horrifying crimes continues to be felt throughout our community and the collective thoughts of the football club, our staff and supporters remain with the families and loved ones of the babies.”
Cheshire Police said officers present at Tuesday’s game had not heard the chant in question and that the force was awaiting an official complaint before investigating.
