Latest News
• The San Francisco Giants’ managerial search was put on a brief pause for team president Farhan Zaidi to fly to Japan to watch superstar pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who is expected to be one of the top free agents on the market this winter, reports The Athletic ’s Andrew Baggarly. The pause in the search comes at a time when the Giants are waiting for one potential candidate, Donnie Ecker of the Texas Rangers, to be available to interview. Another potential candidate is San Diego manager Bob Melvin, who could also be granted permission to interview with the Giants later this month. Mariners bullpen and quality control coach Stephen Vogt is scheduled to interview for the job later this week. (Oct. 19)
• One of the candidates for the Boston Red Sox’s open head of baseball operations job is Chicago Cubs’ executive and former MLB reliever Craig Breslow. The Athletic ’s Patrick Mooney reports on why the Red Sox are interested in Breslow and what he will be considering if he is offered the job. (Oct. 18)
• The New York Mets’ new manager will not be someone currently employed by the team, reports The Athletic ’s Will Sammon. There is no publicly known timeline for when new president of baseball operations David Stearns plans to make the new managerial hire. (Oct. 18)
• The Los Angeles Dodgers are left grappling with yet another disappointing postseason performance, but the team isn’t likely to make drastic changes to the coaching staff heading into next season, writes The Athletic ’s Fabian Ardaya. (Oct. 17)

• Coming off a postseason berth, the Miami Marlins will be looking for a new general manager. The team announced that Kim Ng had declined her half of a mutual option for 2024 and is leaving the organization. The Athletic ’s Brittany Ghiroli reports that Ng left the Marlins after numerous instances when she “felt like she was being stripped of her power and underappreciated.” Ghiroli also reports the Marlins didn’t offer Ng a three-year extension — standard practice for someone who has succeeded in the role but is coming into the final year of their contract — and that the team was considering hiring a director of baseball operations above Ng. Ng became the first woman general manager to lead an MLB team to the postseason earlier this month. (Oct. 16)
• The San Francisco Giants have interviewed major-league assistant coach Alyssa Nakken for their open managerial position, reports The Athletic ’s Andrew Baggarly. Current managerial openings

• Los Angeles Angels — Phil Nevin took over as the Angels’ manager on an interim basis midway through the 2022 season when the team fired Joe Maddon, and he was brought back without the interim title for 2023. But after a season in which the Angels missed the postseason, Nevin was let go.
• New York Mets — Buck Showalter won the National League’s Manager of the Year award in 2022, when the Mets won 101 games in his first season as the team’s manager. The Mets lost in the NLDS, however, and then won only 75 games this season in one of the most expensive flops in MLB history. He was fired with a year left on his contract.
• San Francisco Giants — The Giants were in postseason position coming out of the All-Star break, but a lackluster finish left them out of the playoffs and left Gabe Kapler out of a job just two years after he won the NL’s Manager of the Year award.
